Mountain House previously made these MREs for military contracts until they were phased out in favor of different meal types. They can occasionally be found in MCWs (Meal, Cold Weather) still issued. These are "deadstock" from the last military contract, but they still have 75% of their official shelf life left, making them a good choice for hiking, camping, or long term food storage. Just add water!
